Project Anacostia
PROJECT ANACOSTIA
The Anacostia Masonic Lodge was designed by Appleton P. Clark, Jr in early 1890. It is a three-story, red brick building, 34 x 90 feet, and was built at a cost of $12,000. Prior to 1923, the first floor was leased to a Mr. Tolson who, unsuccessfully, operated as a movie theater. Lloyd Wineland, the founder of the Wineland theater circuit, took it over in 1923 and called it The Logan. The booth was suspended from the back wall and ceiling with access by means of a wooden ladder. Films had to be hauled up to the booth by means of ropes. Lloyd Wineland Jr. operated a penny candy stand and Mrs Wineland was the cashier and piano player.
